Benefits of Indoor Plants

Indoor plants do more than just look pretty. They’ll liven up your entire home by doing what plants do best: cleaning the air.  According to a NASA study, common house plants can remove toxic agents including ammonia, benzene, formaldehyde, trichloroethylene and xylene from the air.

Compared to outdoor plants, taking care of indoor plants requires practically no effort at all. They require some fertilizer to grow, but you’ll be able to find one capable of flourishing in practically any amount of light.

Of course, there’s also the beauty they’ll add to your home. This time of year, a lot of people want to bring the beauty from outside, inside. There’s no better way to do that than setting up a little indoor greenery show.

Popular Selections

The Zebra plant is popular amongst both our customers and our staff. These plants, named for the white stripes that cover their otherwise dark green leaves, grow best in the Fall. They have large leaves and can produce bright yellow flowers. Zebra plants grow best in well-lit rooms, but not in direct sunlight. Place it near a window for best results.

The Nephthytis, or arrowhead plant, also works great indoors. Arrowhead plants are an excellent selection for anyone looking for an indoor plant that doesn’t require much work. Their preferred temperature range, between 60 and 75 degrees, is perfect for indoor growing. Arrowheads don’t even require a whole lot of water. In fact, too much water may lead to root rot. Keep the plant in humid conditions instead. Allow its soil to slightly dry before watering again, and you’ll have yourself a pretty green plant to enjoy throughout the year.

For those looking for plants to hang indoors, the unique Goldfish plant is sure to stand out. It gets its name from its red, orange and yellow blooms: the flowers that grow look like goldfish! While they are a tropical plant, Goldfish plants do not need to be kept in hot areas. They prefer temperatures between 65 and 75 degrees and like to absorb a lot of sunlight. A growing light could do wonders for your Goldfish plant, as they’ll need up to 13 hours of light per day. As with the other plants, don’t place these guys in direct sunlight! They could be permanently damaged if exposed for too long.

African violets are another colorful option to keep things bright when cold weather hits. They come in a variety of colors (white, pink and purple) and require little space to grow. Make sure to water these plants properly though! The flowers are sensitive to water, so make sure it hits only the soil. You’ll also want to fertilize these with specific fertilizers. African violets require high phosphorus levels to grow well.   

Lastly, the Anthurium. This plant comes in all different colors: red, pink, lavender, salmon, and even chocolate. Anthuriums are very easy to take care of as well. Just place them in indirect sunlight and use the right soil. A mix of potting soil and orchid soil, half and half, will maximize their growth. You only need to water these guys when the soil is dry to the touch.
