There have been several scientific studies into the health benefits of houseplants, and the results are pretty remarkable. Houseplants have been proven to improve air quality, raise humidity levels, and even help people to fight common illnesses.
Enhanced Air Quality
This is one of the better known benefits of houseplants, since the same principle holds for outdoor plants. Still, improved air quality is easy to notice indoors. According to NASA, indoor plants can remove up to 87 percent of toxins from the air. Common indoor toxins include formaldehyde, benzene and trichloroethylene. Formaldehyde is most common in rugs and cigarette smoke, benzene in areas loaded with paper like a library or study, and trichloroethylene in freshly painted areas. Having indoor plants in these locations can help improve the air you breathe.
You’ll also be able to breathe easier, since plants give off oxygen during the day. Thanks to photosynthesis, your home will have higher oxygen levels, which can improve your energy level. Perhaps the most interesting study we’ve seen on indoor plants comes from researchers at Kansas State University. In the study, indoor plants were placed in certain hospital rooms. Patients in the room with the plants ultimately required less pain medication, had lower blood pressure, experienced less fatigue and anxiety, and were released sooner than those without them. This logic doesn’t just apply to hospitals! A Dutch study discovered that adding plants to office settings decreased fatigue, colds, headaches, coughs, sore throats, and flu-like symptoms. In Norway, a similar study showed that sickness rates fell by more than 60 percent in offices with plants.
