We’re not superstitious here at Dambly’s, because we know that plants bring good luck going into the New Year! The luck they bring isn’t just a magic trick. Having plants and flowers in your home improves air quality by increasing oxygen levels and adds vibrance to the world around you. Those refreshing benefits would be enough to bring luck to even the most jinxed souls! Still, for those into the more supernatural benefits of flowers and plants, we’ve got a deep selection of items that have become legendary for the good luck they bring. They’re the perfect New Years gift, for an unlucky friend or for yourself!
Perhaps the most famous luck bringing plant, Lucky Bamboo has been rumored to bring good fortune in various ways depending on how many stalks are bundled together. Here’s a brief list of what each number of stalks bring:
- 1 stalk = simplicity, meaningful life
- 2 stalks = Luck in Love and Marriage
- 3 stalks = Happiness
- 5 stalks = academic achievement, creativity
- 7 stalks = good health
- 8 stalks = luck in wealth
- 10 stalks = completion or perfection
- 21 stalks = all-purpose blessing
Some people are cautious about buying lucky bamboo because of it’s misleading name. Lucky Bamboo is not bamboo at all! It’s in the Dracaena family, but has the appearance of bamboo. You can grow it in soil or hydroponically, and if you place it in filtered sunlight it will grow well and be healthy.
If you’re looking for a little financial mojo, the jade plant in the one for you. It’s rounded leaves are said to bring good fortune to all who grow them. If you plan on starting a small business, or know a small business owner and want to bring them a successful year, no gift is better than a jade plant.
Growing a jade plant is pretty straight forward. You’re going to want to water it only when the top of the soil is dry to the touch. Overwatering can cause root rot, so make sure you don’t water it on a schedule. Check the soil. If it’s dry on the top, then water. Place the plant in full sunlight, and you’ll be raking in the dollars in no time!
As rewarding as the effort is come Christmas morning, the holidays can be a stressful time! To combat this with an indoor plant, we recommend the orchid. Orchids are said to soothe the soul and relax those around it. They deepen friendships and help love grow. The Ancient Greeks believed orchids were even useful in fertility.
Plant your orchids in moist, well-draining conditions. They prefer bright, indirect light because too much light leads to leaf scorch while insufficient light leads to poor flowering. It’s extremely important to note that orchids need to be kept cool at night. They can tolerate higher temperatures during the day, but they need to experience a drop of about 15 degrees at night.
Of course, we couldn’t make a list of plants that bring good fortune without talking about miniature roses! It’s well known that roses attract love and passion, but they can also provide healing energies. White roses, specifically, purify and heal while peach roses bring peace and spirituality.
To grow healthy roses, make sure they receive lots of direct sunlight. Keep your miniature roses in temperatures ranging for 60 to 70 degrees, and water them when the soil is dry to the touch. The miniature roses we sell prefer a warmer climate than our Zone 6, so be sure to keep them indoors through the winter. If you plan on keeping your roses indoors through the Spring, use a little bit of rose or balanced garden fertilizer.
