Have you ever seen those birdhouses on long poles that look like they are hotels for our winged friends? Those are purple martin houses! Purple Martins are iridescent, large swallows. They eat thousands of bugs each day which makes them a very desirable backyard bird, and because their diets are exclusive to insects, they do not require you to provide a fancy buffet of bird seed.
Purple martins prefer artificial houses for shelter in open areas to provide them a good visual range to survey. Since they are colonial nesters, they prefer large birdhouses with many compartments. Both apartment style houses and multiple gourd style houses will give them the perfect place to nest.
You can protect purple martin houses from predators by using baffles on your birdhouse pool.
