Shade Plants

Annuals and Perennials for your Shady Spot

What are they?

A common question we are asked at Dambly's is, "I want to plant flowers but my garden beds are in the shade, what can I plant?" Although some colorful favorites require sun to thrive, we can still help you design something beautiful for that shady spot. Some of the best perennial shade plants to use are Hosta and Heuchera. There are so many varieties to choose from, and they are very low maintenance. Looking for a pop of color? Aquilegia, commonly known as Granny's Bonnet or Columbine, is a good perennial option. Annuals like Impatiens, Begonia, Torenia and Coleus can also hold up without full sun.

Why Plant Trees?

Every day, we see trees all around us. And yet you may wonder, 'Why on earth should I bother planting trees in my yard?'  Aside from adding beautiful scenery to the world around us, trees are extraordinarily beneficial to the environment, and can be used to one’s advantage in many other ways.
From an environmental standpoint, trees help filter the air, in a process called photosynthesis, in which they decrease the amount of harmful CO2 in the environment. Additionally, they help to prevent soil erosion, improve our water quality, and some trees even produce beautiful flowers and edible fruit!
In a home environment, strategically placed trees can be used as a way to shield the view of nosy neighbors, help block unwanted sound from nearby highways or other surroundings, create protective shade for those hot summer days, or simply as decoration for your lawn. They also provide a home to much of the local wildlife.  If trees are planted in such a way, their windbreaks can actually be utilized in reducing wind, reducing utility bills for air conditioning and heating, snow entrapment, and aesthetic pleasure.
In autumn, many trees will splash the landscape with color when their leaves turn. When those leaves fall to the ground, they can be collected and used as a source of mulch for the garden.
Most importantly, planting, caring for, and watching a tree grow can be one of the most relaxing and rewarding experiences a person could ever imagine.
